About

I am a global and social historian with particular interests in transcultural exchanges in the modern and contemporary world. My current research focus includes: the modern history of humanitarianism and human rights in the Asia Pacific; the history of borderlands; twentieth-century US social history; and theory and practice in history and contemporary art.

Knowledge of the past affects our perception of the present. Exploring history is therefore a critical practice that could bring about fundamental changes in our worldview. The goal of my historical inquiry is to dismantle, renew, and recreate our understanding of the present world through research and practice in history and memory.

The past is a vast sea of the unknown. Historical inquiry is an uncharted voyage into this boundless expanse of the past. The exploratory journey to the unknown past spawns crucial changes in our ways of seeing the world, which consequently opens up new horizons for envisioning alternative futures.
